In my industry, social media has been a game-changer for promotion and marketing — but it’s also an incredible tool for engagement, community building, and storytelling. My passion is empowering others to use social media for all its potential.
I am a social media strategist and facilitator for national programming at WGBH. My work with national broadcast productions such as American Experience, Frontline, NOVA, Antiques Roadshow, and Masterpiece includes social media strategy and execution; tactics to increase traffic, tune-in, brand awareness, and membership for public media; and a constant evaluation of current tactics in light of new research, shifting APIs and trends. I run training workshops and manage a biweekly meeting where social media professionals across WGBH come together to brainstorm new ideas and solidify best practices.
Previously, I worked in PRI’s The World newsroom from 2012 to 2015 as the program’s first social media producer. There, I focused on social media journalism skills of the newsroom, teaching journalists to use deep search and listening skills to identify stories and find sources for the daily radio program and PRI.org.
My previous work as the digital content producer for WNYC radio program The Takeaway and for the history series American Experience helped my multimedia, research and editorial skills in collaborative and fast-moving environments. I worked as a location manager for the HBO film “Strangers No More,” which went on to win the 2011 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.
I have my BA from Colby College and a Master’s Degree in Journalism from Northeastern University. I live in Boston with my husband Joe and play softball any chance I get. My favorite non-PBS shows are Orphan Black and Survivor. I have a deep love of Justin Timberlake songs and cereal for dinner. Follow me at @torystarr3.

I was trying to forward an email I got titled “JoJo’s Pay It Forward Project” . It is available at the website Journeytojojo.com. It is this one man’s personal struggles with opiate addiction and his plan to change the world starting this friday with just one word…JOJO. You have to read it. It had me memorized last night. Just doing my part to “Pay it forward.” Hope you “enjoy the ride.”
Thought provoking, engaging and wise. Thank you!
